Vintage Old Green And Red 1800's Baseball Bat-willow
It is 34 long but weighs only 24 ounces. Is it made out of willow as older bats could have been?
I don't know what the wood is. It is a lathe-turned, fat handled bat with what looked to be original red and green paint. The green large ring is still in tact while most of the red finish has flaked or worn away. There was something special about this bat when I first saw it and have seen nothing to compare to it since. It is not cracked and has some minor knob issues but for what I believe its age to be...
My first thought was it was a child's bat but 34 in quite long for it to be that. There are no markings or indication of its maker. The strange thing to me is that the barrel end does not have the flat look of the early bats yet the bat does not look to be homemade. There may have been something written on the barrel end but there is not enough left for me to make a definitive statement that there is.
