As the Babe and Gehrig were driving from Dunn Field to their hotel, Ruth suddenly remembered that he hadnt visited the orphans home (located on Franklin Street where the Marion Center is now). So he instructed the taxi driver to take him there as quickly as possible. As Babe walked into the hall he was met by a group of delighted kiddies who recognized him instantly. Shrieks of delight greeted his appearance and the great star gathered the children around him and talked to them for almost half an hour. Ruth had appeared in Elmira in 1923 after the Yankees had won their first World Series. Five thousand fans were hoping to see a repeat of the 1928 homer.
