1920s Spalding "Die Stamped" No. 300B (Series) / MODEL B8 Wooden Base Ball Bat (OWNER'S MARKS). Bat has gouges and chips on knob & in other areas. Has scuffs on end & balances on end well. Has missing finish and finish damage. Still pretty smooth overall and the grain is holding together well. It has Maxine R____ (see photo) written on the barrel in pencil. Black tape from handle is not longer present, please see WHITE pointer.
Dark brown staining on barrel is mostly worn away, please see RED pointer. Bat is supposed to be 32", but has shrunken to 31.5" over the decades.
Weights just about 40.5 ounces. Please make sure to do your own research, however, as a very long time has gone by and these details may be less than perfectly accurate.
Please see all photos for details, condition and feel free to ask any questions, thank you. All of the bats were finished with a very dark BROWN stain (thus the B-series name), except for twelve (12) inches of the Handle, which was left Natural. Six (6) inches of Electrical Tape was wound on the Handle, designed to effect a better grip.
Attached to the listing is an advert for 300B series of bats, from page 11 of the 1925 Spalding Spring & Summer Catalog. It contains all twelve models offered, including the B-8 bat model. As you can see, each model was taken from a Player Autograph model.
Please see this image and the 23 other photos. From 1919-25, the last year they were made was 1925.
The B-8 model came in just one Length; 32-inches. However, the weight could be anywhere from 37 to 43 ounces. The B-8 was designed after the Miller Huggins model bat. Huggins was a man of small stature (5' 6 140 lbs), who played 2B for the St Louis Cardinals from 1904-16. Huggins was elected to the National Baseball Hall of Fame in 1964 as a manager.
